Review Summary: DeWalt DCD771

It’s a well-known fact that the power tools made by DeWalt are held in high regard by handymen all over the world. Along with Milwaukee, DeWalt is probably the most famous US power tool maker, manufacturing and selling devices that sport a combination of excellent construction quality and top performance.

However, an important thing to note here is that DeWalt doesn’t only manufacture heavy-duty tools -they also have homeowner-grade devices on offer. One such tool, the DCD771 drill/driver, is the topic of this review. Featuring a compact, lightweight design, as well as the high-speed transmission (1,500 RPM) and a 1/2″ single sleeve with ratcheting chuck, it is a tool worth taking a closer look at.

In case you’re looking for an affordable drill/driver made by a famous, reliable brand, the DCD771 just might be the right choice for your needs. Let’s check it out!

DCD771 Specifications:

  • Weight-2.8lbs
  • Dimensions-10.8″ x 8.2″ x 3.5″
  • Speed-1,500 RPM
  • Voltage-20V
  • Battery-Lithium-Ion

DeWalt DCD771 Drill/Driver – The Basics

The design of this drill/driver will be familiar to anyone who ever had an opportunity to use a DeWalt power tool. The model sports the company’s signature color scheme and the same, well-known ergonomic design that provides the user with a firm and comfortable grip.

Power-wise, the DCD771 is a homeowner-grade tool. With an engine that delivers 300 UWO and reaches the maximum speed of 1,500 RPM, you will be able to tackle most of the conventional drilling and driving jobs around the house. The unit can be utilized in two different speed settings, which are 0-450 RPM and 0-1,500 RPM, providing the user with the necessary versatility during operation.

Another impressive thing about this model is that it sports a heavy-duty 1/2″ ratcheting chuck. It comes with carbide inserts and provides a good grip over the drill bit.

The Features

As we said, the design of this drill/driver is quite similar to that of the other DeWalt products. The model combines the usual “contractor” colors to achieve an attractive black & yellow look, which is also the signature color combination of all DeWalt power tools.

The fact that it was designed to fit snugly in hand is apparent right from the start. The handle is contoured and has a rubberized texture that provides the user with a firm grip. Once the battery is attached, the DCD771 has a solid balance and causes no fatigue, even if you have to use it for longer periods.

With the dimensions of 10.8″ x 8.2″ x 3.5″ and the weight of nearly three pounds, this drill/driver is compact and lightweight. This will be appreciated by all those who often have to work overhead or use the drill in tight spaces.

When it comes to power, this model is potent enough to assist the user with most light-duty drilling and driving tasks. Its 300 UWO engine reaches the maximum speed of 1,500 RPM, which is the standard RPM rating for most drills/drivers in this price category. We like the fact that there are two different speed settings available -0-450 RPM and 0-1,500 RPM. As you already know, this allows the user to adjust the current speed to the task at hand, which increases productivity and gives a better finish.

Another feature that deserves praise is the 1/2″ ratcheting chuck with carbide inserts. It grips the bit tightly and delivers excellent results, just like we expected.

Accessories & Warranty

Unfortunately, purchasing DeWalt DCD771 in its bare-tool version is precisely like it sounds – no accessories are included in the deal. If you don’t already own a DeWalt battery and a charger, buying it in one of the company’s combo kits is undoubtedly a better idea. The tool is accompanied by DeWalt’s standard 3-year warranty deal.

Things we liked about it

Although a homeowner-grade tool and unsuitable for heavy-duty applications, the DCD771 has still managed to impress us with its convenient design and reliable performance.

Due to the fact that it was made by the DeWalt, the look and feel of this device is not cheap or flimsy. It’s a well-constructed, robust model that, if used with care, could serve you for the years to come. It sports the company’s ergonomic design and has an excellent fit in hand, as well as solid balance.

With this drill/driver, you will be able to tackle all of your standard drilling and driving jobs around the house. The 300 UWO engine and the all-metal transmission provide enough strength for successful completion of every task, while the 1/2″ ratcheting chuck with carbide inserts removes the need for frequent re-tightening.

Things we didn’t like

TheDCD771 was not designed for heavy-duty applications. Using the model for demanding tasks will almost certainly lead to overloading and overheating -there’s just not enough power. Those who need a more potent device of this type should look elsewhere.

Our only other complaint is the lack of additional features, such as the battery gauge or the LED light. Without these features, using the model in areas with poor lighting is much harder, and there is no way to quickly check the remaining battery juice.

General Impressions

Those who bought DCD771 are generally satisfied with its design and performance. They say that it offers a good value for the price and that it’s an excellent choice for smaller jobs. The users are especially pleased with the unit’s chuck, claiming that it provides a good grip over the bit.

The DeWalt DCD771 drill/driver is a great choice for homeowners and light-duty professionals. Coming at a genuinely affordable price, the model is more than capable of tackling most of the smaller jobs and has a compact design that causes no user fatigue. If you’re looking for a cheap but efficient brand-name drill, this one should be among your top contenders.
