Review Summary:

It’s a well-known fact that Porter-Cable competes with companies such as, for example, Ryobi, as they manufacture and sell power tools that are at least 20% cheaper than those sold by premium brands. However, that doesn’t mean that you should completely discard their offerings -the company’s 4-piece combo kits are highly popular for a reason.

Their PCCK616L4 toolset, which will be the focus of this review, is a reasonably-priced 4-piece kit consisting of adrill/driver, a circular saw, a reciprocating saw, and a job site flashlight. It is very similar to the PCCK614L4 package, and, just like that combo kit, it also includes a bag, two batteries, and a charger.

This combo kit might be of interest to you if you’re a value-minded professional or a homeowner who often has to repair things around the house. It consists of compact, conveniently-designed tools that are surprisingly potent and deliver enough power for all kinds of job site applications. Let’s take a closer look at each device and see what they’ve got to offer:

Specifications:

  • Number of Tools–4
  • Weight –15.5lbs
  • Battery-1 Li-Ion battery (2 included)
  • Voltage-20V

Porter-Cable PCCK616L4 -The Basics

The drill/driver found in this combo kit is also present is some of the other Porter-Cable toolsets. It’s a simple but efficient device whose maximum speed stands at 1,500 RPM, and which can be used in two different speed settings. Weighing just 3.5 pounds, the device is also compact enough to be used for hours on end without feeling fatigue.

The PCC671 reciprocating saw sports a similar design -it is compact enough to be used in hard-to-reach spaces. Even the rougher cutting tasks are not a problem for this device, as it has the maximum stroke rate of 3,000 SPM. It also has a pivoting shoe and a variable speed trigger.

The circular saw, code-named PCC661, has a 5-1/2″ cutting blade which rotates at the maximum speed of impressive 3,700 RPM. It also sports a 50° beveling shoe and an over-molded handle that provides a firm grip.

Finally, the PCC701 flashlight is there to provide illumination in dark areas. It has a shallow profile and a pivoting head that makes it easy to direct the beam of light at the desired spot.

All of these tools are covered by Porter-Cable’s 3-year limited warranty and are accompanied by two batteries, one charger, and one contractor bag.

The Features

Drill/Driver PCC601

As we already said, this is a very compact device -with a weight of 2.5 pounds and the length of 8.25 inches, using it in tight spaces is entirely possible. There is also the usual comfort handle with a rubberized grip that prevents slippage and reduces vibrations.

The 283 UWO motor of this device offers solid performance. The unit can be used in two different speed settings and one of 22 clutch positions, so it’s pretty easy to find the right setting for the task at hand.

Reciprocating Saw PCC671

The design of this reciprocating saw is very similar to that of PCC670 model. Both the frontal part of the unit and its rear handle are covered with a rubberized texture -its purpose is to reduce the vibrations and make operating with this potent machine as comfortable as possible. There is also a keyless blade clamp which removes the need to use special tools when changing blades.

Performance-wise, the PCC671 has a stroke rate of 3,000 SPM and is impressively powerful for a cordless reciprocating saw. The user can easily adjust the speed by using the variable speed trigger and, in that way, find the best power output and increase his productivity.

Circular Saw PCC661

Sporting a design that’s similar to all other 20V Max Porter-Cable power tools, this circular saw has a compact build and a texturized handle that reduces user fatigue. The model has relatively low weight (6.5 pounds) for a cordless circular saw and is, therefore, an excellent choice for all those who use these types of devices on a daily basis.

With the maximum speed of 8,000 RPM, the PCC661 is more than capable of assisting the user with a wide range of cutting tasks. This includes unorthodox cutting applications as well -the unit’s 50-degree beveling shoe takes care of that.

LED Flashlight PCC701

The fact that this model doesn’t have the usual pistol-grip style construction of other job site flashlights is immediately noticeable. However, this shallow profile comes with a significant advantage –PCC701 can be used in hard-to-reach spaces.

The overall build quality of this device deserves only words of praise, as doesits pivoting head. It allows the user to direct the beam of light at the current working surface, which can come in very handy in areas with poor lighting. The model’s switch is sealed under a rubber boot and is very easy to use thanks to its large size.

Accessories & Warranty

These four power tools are accompanied by the usual Porter-Cable combo kit accessories. These include a PCC699L standard charger, two 20V Max Lithium-Ion batteries of the same capacity (1.3Ah) and the usual red & black contractor bag made out of soft material.

When it comes to warranty, this combo kit is covered by the manufacturer’s 3-year limited warranty. It’s the standard kind of warranty deal when it comes to most power tool brands -we expected nothing less.

Things we liked about it

Although they shouldn’t really be used as workhorses, the tools coming inside this combo kit offer reliable performance and can be used both at home and at a job site. All of them feature potent motors and impact mechanisms that allow them to effortlessly power through most jobs.

Furthermore, each of the included tools sports Porter-Cable’s signature ergonomic design. Every device was designed to reduce user fatigue and vibrations and increase productivity as much as possible.

We think that PCC701 flashlight is a really nice addition and a device that successfully complements the other tools in the package. Moreover, we praise the PC’s decision to include all the necessary accessories, removing the need to purchase any of them separately and spend more money.

Q

Things we didn’t like

On the other hand, one should never forget that the tools found in PCCK616L4 are not of commercial-grade quality. Yes, they can handle more robust applications, but using them for the really demanding projects will almost certainly lead to breakage and overheating.

The charger included in the package is not a rapid charger, but rather a standard one. This means that it takes some time to recharge the batteries, which might be a deal breaker for the more impatient handymen.
