A subsidiary of Black & Decker, Porter-Table is among America’s most well-known manufacturers of power tools. Over the last century, they have produced countless devices and accessories for the contractors and DIY enthusiasts, and have become famous for the quality and reliability of their products.

Keep reading on and find out everything about it!

Porter-Cable PCC620LB – The Basics

At the heart of this highly capable hammer drill is its 330 UWO motor with the maximum speed of 1,600 RPM. It allows users to tackle both small and large operations and makes the unit an ideal choice for all kinds of wood, metal, and masonry projects. Thanks to its 2-speed gearbox, the user can easily adjust the speed to one that’s required for the current task.

With a weight of only 3.6 pounds, the PCC620LB is also very lightweight and easy to maneuver with. It sports an ergonomic design, a convenient belt hook, a LED light for working in the dark areas, as well as two magnets for the bit storage.

Along with the hammer drill, the package also includes two Lithium-Ion batteries, a charger, and a kit bag.

The Features

The Design

Just like we expected, the PCC620LB features that familiar look of all Porter-Cable power tools, sporting the combination of black, red, and white colors. Since it weighs only 3.6 pounds, maneuvering with this hammer drill is a piece of cake, and this will be of crucial importance to those who have to deal with drilling masonry on a daily basis. The unit’s handle sports an ergonomic design and feels great in hand, causing no fatigue or cramps after prolonged working sessions.

Other things we liked about its design are the inclusion of an integrated LED light (for working in dimly-lit areas,) a battery gauge, and a convenient belt clip. All of these things combined show that Porter-Cable deems design as an essential part of every power tool, and that’s always a big plus in our book.

Power

As we already said, the PCC620LB comes with a 330 UWO motor with the maximum speed of 1,600 RPM and 27,200 BPM. Depending on your needs, you can use the unit at two different rates – 0-400 RPM and 1,600 RPM, making the model more than suitable for a plethora of drilling jobs. Higher-torque applications very possible with this drill – we had absolutely no problems while we tested it in masonry.

The motor is powering a high-quality 1/2″ metal chuck. During the testing, our bits never slipped, and we were quite pleased with the provided magnetic clip that allows secure bit storage. The 22-position clutch also deserves praise, since it provides the user with additional control during various fastening applications.

Battery

The model utilizes all-new 2.0Ah Lithium-Ion cells. These offer a 30% more juice than their older 1.5 amp-hour cousins, which is sure to be helpful when it comes to larger projects. The fact that the unit comes with dual batteries allows quick swapping once the first battery dies, while the 2 amp charger enables rapid recharging. There’s also a convenient kit bag, as well the 3-year limited warranty.

If you’re looking for a slightly more affordable option, and you already own cordless Porter-Cable equipment, this machine is available as a tool-only version. Known as the PCC620B, it’s an identical drill but doesn’t include any batteries or a charger.

This means that you can utilize your existing lithium cells with the Porter-Cable PCC620B — as long as they’re rated at 20-volts — saving your hard-earned dollars.

Things we liked about it

Porter-Cable PCC620LB is quite an impressive hammer drill – the fact that it comes at a reasonable price did not have a negative effect on its overall quality. As it has a low weight and an ergonomic design, working with this drill is a joy, no matter how large and complicated the project is. The guys from Porter-Cable supplied this model with a number of small conveniences, like the LED light, magnetic bit holder, battery gauge, and a belt clip, and that’s something we always give special praise to.

The unit’s powerful motor and the 1/2″ chuck work beautifully, effortlessly drilling holes in even the most robust materials. The model is versatile enough to be used in wood, steel, and masonry, and as such is bound to become quite popular in the upcoming months. Its affordable price and the convenient accessories are just bonuses.

Q

Things we didn’t like

Our only complaint is the fact that the package includes no side handle. This leads to weaker control over the unit during the drilling/hammering, and thus to less accurate holes in the material. The lack of a side handle is something we’ve expected at this price, but we still have to mention it as a flaw.

Furthermore, a couple of users report that the chucks on their units started malfunctioning after a couple of months. We’ve experienced no such problems since we had a limited time to test the drill.

What Users Say About The Porter-Cable PCC620LB

The users are generally pleased with this product, saying that it’s a quality hammer drill that works just as advertised. They’re especially pleased that the package includes two batteries, a charger, and a kit bag, saying that it’s a pretty good deal for the price.

As we said, some users had issues with the unit’s chuck, but they’re a minority when compared to hundreds of satisfied users.

Conclusion

There’s a lot to like about this hammer drill. Just like many other Porter-Cable power tools, it had us impressed with the sheer number of convenient features that it offers, some of which might seem unimportant at the first look but which are actually vital when it comes to overall ease of operation.

The fact that this well-designed and powerful model comes with a couple of handy accessories and that it has a good warranty makes it absolutely worthy to be considered for purchase – you won’t regret buying it.
