Bosch PS31-2A Review Summary:

When it comes to power tools, rare are the manufacturers that can be compared to Bosch. This German multinational electronics company is one of the world’s best-known suppliers of power tools, famous for quality, reliability, and efficiency of their products. The Bosch PS31-2A is one of such products – it’s a cordless drill with a reasonable price and a good performance.

Just like we expected, this model is highly popular with both amateurs and contractors, as it possesses a set of features that set it apart from the competition – it’s something we’re used to when it comes to Bosch power tools. Lighter weight, two speed settings, durable batteries, and a high torque are just some of the conveniences that come with this unit.

In this article, we’ll be analyzing both the perks and the flaws of this cordless drill – join us, and let’s find out if it’s worth the money!

Specifications:

  • Weight – 2.14lbs
  • Dimensions – 12.6″ x 9.8″ x 4.2″
  • Batteries – Lithium Ion
  • Torque – 265 in-lb
  • Voltage – 12 volts

Bosch PS31-2A – The Basics

As you can see from the pictures, the Bosch PS31-2A is, actually, quite a small and compact drill. It sports a weight of only 2.14 pounds and is thus considered to be one of the lightest models in this category. With a head length being only 7″, it’s a fantastic tool for those who have to deal with tight corners, enclosed spaces, and overhead working. The small size of the drill, as well as the soft grip handle, allow handymen to easily engage in precise but comfortable drilling sessions.

Furthermore, the PS31-2A comes with two speeds, 20+1 clutch settings, the max torque of 265 in-lb, two 12V lithium-ion batteries, a single sleeve 3/8-inch chuck, and a LED light that allows working in the dark areas. Let’s analyze all of these features:

The Features

Power

There’s no doubt about the fact that small tools can be really handy. Even though the PS31-2A is surely a slim unit, it comes at the sacrifice of power. It boasts the top speed of 1,300 RPM (Rotations per Minute) and the torque power of 265 in-lb. That’s far better than we expected, but it’s still considerably less when compared to 18V models. Those that used a higher-powered drill will surely notice the drop-off, so don’t forget to keep your needs in mind.

On the bright side, you’ll be getting 20+1 settings that will let you tweak the torque according to your needs. The drill can be used in two different speeds – 0-350 and 0-1,300 RPM. It’s not the most powerful model on the market, but will undoubtedly do the trick for the average users.

Design

With a weight of only 2.14 pounds and the dimensions of 12.6″ x 9.8″ x 4.2″, the PS31-2A is incredibly easy to use. Its lighter weight and a slim figure will help your arms and hands stay fresh, and will let you work in all those hard-to-reach corners. The grip handle is soft and controls are easy to reach – it’s something we’ve expected from a manufacturer with this reputation.

The durability isn’t something to worry about either – it’s been constructed from Durashield (a blend of Nylon and ABS) and can survive drops of up to 12 feet.

Battery Life

When we consider the size and the power of this tool, we can safely say that the Bosch PS31-2A sports a solid battery life. It comes with two 2.0 Ah Lithium-Ion batteries, and these should provide you with enough juice for lighter drilling tasks.

R

Things we liked about it

Cordless drills manufactured by Bosch are indeed something special, and this one is no exception. When we combine its lighter weight with a compact design, we get a small drill that’s ideal for working in tight spaces. The two speeds (350/1,300 RPM), on the other hand, make the model very fast and more than suitable for all kinds of household tasks.

We also liked the unit’s batteries, as well as the included fast charger – they allow long working sessions without stopping. Another thing that deserves praise is the soft grip on the handle, as well as the fact that the drill is well-balanced and very comfortable to use. We also liked the built-in LED light, the 3-year warranty, and the reasonable price.

Q

Things we didn’t like

This is a perfect hobbyist drill – it will help you with the smooth completion of your DIY projects and with all sorts of drilling tasks around the house. Unfortunately, it’s not that good of a choice if you’re a contractor. The Bosch PS31-2A is not suitable for commercial use, as it’s not powerful enough for the heavy-duty tasks. Avoid such operations if you don’t want to shorten the unit’s lifespan.

Our only other complaint is the presence of a plastic chuck. It’s not an issue that can be overlooked, as it can become wobbly and loose after months of use. There are cordless drills with beefier chucks that come at the same price, but they’re heavier – the PS31-2A is aimed at those concerned about weight.

What Users Say About The Bosch PS31-2A

People are praising PS31-2A mostly for its good performance and the compact size – the combination of these two things make it a perfect choice for the DIY hobbyists. They also love that the unit comes with a couple of reliable batteries, as well as that it sports a LED light that allows working in dimly-lit areas.

But they’re mostly pleased with the fact that this is a Bosch cordless drill that’s not too expensive – and that’s maybe the most important reason behind the unit’s immense popularity.

Conclusion

Even though it’s small, this cordless drill boasts solid performance, making it ideal for consumers and contractors who often engage in light-duty tasks.

If you’re an electrician who has to work in tight areas, the PS31-2A is bound to become your new best friend. It’s also an excellent choice for plumbers and similar contractors who need a compact tool to do some simple drilling and driving on a daily basis. You won’t regret buying it – it is, after all, a Bosch product.
