JET J-2500 Review
Reviewed by: Timothy Henderson
The floor-mounted drill presses are an invaluable piece of equipment inside every workshop. As the name suggests, they are mounted on the floor and are therefore very stable, allowing one to perform heavy-duty drilling tasks without the vibration issues. They’re great tools that provide users with versatility, efficiency, and high reliability.
Is JET J-2500 one of such models? This unit is a game-changer for the intermediate DIY enthusiasts and one of the best mid-range models that the company manufactured so far. It seems to be an excellent choice for those who don’t want to spend too much money but still want to be able to do some basic cutting.
But to find out if this model is really worth the money, we’ll have to go a bit deeper. We’ll take a closer look at the features of JET J-2500 and try to determine if it’s the right press drill for your needs. Read on!
- Weight – 167lbs

JET J-2500 – The Basics
Most of the beginner-aimed press drills are capable of cutting some metal sheets, but they can’t actually process tough materials consistently. Those that need a model with a commercial-grade appeal that doesn’t cost too much will find that J-2500 has everything they need. Not only does it look like a professional, high-powered model, but it also shares the performance characteristics.
Thanks to its 3/4 HP (9.0 AMP) engine, the J-2500 is more than capable of assisting the user with his wood, steel, and aluminum projects. It has a very fast RPM, a permanent lubrication, a hard-steel frame, and it doesn’t require frequent maintenance. Pretty impressive, wouldn’t you say?
In the following paragraphs, we’ll be closely analyzing each feature of this model. If you’d like to know more about it, read on!
The unit weighs 167 pounds and has the dimensions of 54″ x 20″ x 10.5″. As we said, its primary part is its hard-steel frame, making the machine very durable and capable of withstanding mechanical damage. The first thing to notice about the unit’s design is its large table. It is made out of cast-iron and has the dimensions of 11.5″ x 11.5″. The best thing about is that it’s entirely adjustable – you can rotate it for 360 degrees and tilt it left and right for 45 degrees.
The thing that supports this table and the moving head is a sizeable ground column, manufactured from steel. It makes the whole unit very stable and prevents vibrations that occur when you’re working at high speeds.
Unfortunately, the JET J-2500 doesn’t feature a laser system for the hole centering, but it does have a working light. The light will be of great help when it comes to general accuracy during work, but also in cases when you have to work in dimly-lit areas.
The unit is powered by a 3/4 HP (9.0 AMP) motor, which drives an adjustable belt with 16 different speed settings, ranging from 200 RPM to impressive 3,630 RPM. As you can already guess, this variable speed allows greater flexibility during the work, letting you adapt the speed to the one that’s currently required for the task at hand. The motor is very efficient and also quite noisy, so we advise wearing hearing protection whenever working with JET J-2500.
The model’s spindle comes with the so-called “permanent lubrication”, meaning that the user doesn’t have to apply frequent lubrication or do any sort of maintenance in the long term. The chuck, on the other hand, is standard 5/8″ in length, while the spindle travels quite deep with 3-1/4″ quill stroke.
Built to last – great construction quality
Powerful motor allows metal drilling
No vibration problems
Only 2 years of warranty
Things we liked about it
The first thing about this floor-mounted press drill that had us impressed was its build quality. Since its primary build material is hard steel, the owner won’t have to worry about damage or breaks – JET J-2500 easily withstands all kinds of operation and works like a clock. The fact that it’s large and heavy removes the issues that come with vibrations, which is yet another advantage of owning this machine.
We were very pleased with the results of the testing. The drill worked just like we expected, as it efficiently drilled holes through all kinds of materials we threw at it – even metal. We liked its convenient, adjustable table, as well as its 16 speed settings that allow greater flexibility and increase one’s productivity. The same goes for the permanent lubrication feature and the integrated work light.
Things we didn’t like
The most significant flaw of this unit is that it’s quite noisy in operation. It is, in fact, one of the loudest floor-mounted press drills we’ve had a chance to test so far, so it’s of crucial importance to wear hearing protection whenever working with it.
We didn’t like that JET J-2500 comes with only two years of warranty, although that’s not a serious issue when we take a plethora of competing models with 1-year warranties into account.
Owners of this press drill are very pleased with its performance and durability, saying that it’s the best power tool of this type they’ve owned so far. They’re giving praise to the model’s 90-degree tilting table, powerful motor, variable speed, and to its hard-steel construction that makes them confident about the drill’s reliability.
They’re satisfied with their purchase and are keen to recommend this unit to their friends and acquaintances, saying that it’s one of the best power tool investments they’ve made so far.
All in all, we think that the JET J-2500 is one of the most reliable machines that the company has ever released. It had us impressed right from the start with its fantastic construction quality, which, when combined with solid performance, turns this drill into a wonderful, cost-effective investment.
We can do nothing else but recommend it for purchase – buying J-2500 can’t really turn out as a mistake.
