Review Summary:

Ever since it was founded almost 70 years ago, WEN has been producing some of the most efficient and well-made power tools in the world. Their line of power tools includes bench grinders, air compressors, miter saws, nailers, generators, and a variety of other products. Among them are the floor press drills, too – WEN 4227 is a good example.

This model sports an impressive amount of power, as it has an efficient 13.0 AMP motor with 12 different speed settings and the maximum rate of 2,940 RPM. It also has a number of other convenient features, such as the adjustable cast-iron table, the LED light, or the X-Pattern Laser system.

We’ve decided to determine this unit’s value for the money by carefully analyzing all of its features and by going over its design and power. If you’d like to know more about WEN 4227, keep reading.

Specifications:

  • Weight – 214lbs
  • Dimensions – 14″ x 30″ x 67″
  • Max Speed – 2,940 RPM
  • Chuck Capacity – 5/8″
  • Voltage – 120 volts

WEN 4227 – The Basics

This floor-mounted press drill is a large, well-built machine that looks and works just as advertised. Its large size has both its good and bad sides, with the good one being that there are virtually no vibrations during operation. The WEN 4227 also has an oversized table (14″ x 14″), as well as the laser system that allows making more accurate cuts.

Performance wise, the model sports a robust 13.0 AMP motor with the maximum speed of 2,940 RPM. The speed is variable, allowing one to adapt the speed to the one required for the material at hand, while the unit’s 5/8″ chuck accept a broad spectrum of drill bits (except the smallest bits).

The Features

The Design

Sporting black & orange color combination just like all other WEN power tools, the WEN 4227 weighs 214 pounds and has the dimensions of 14″ x 30″ x 67″. This makes it quite large, which is not surprising due to the fact that it’s the most powerful model in the company’s press drill lineup. It’s an unusually tall machine, which means that you’ll have to find ample space in your workshop to accommodate it. The drill can, of course, be bolted to your workbench, which is guaranteed to provide you with additional security and stability.

At 14″ x 14″, the unit’s cast-iron work table has quite an impressive size and allows accommodation of sizeable workpieces. Some might consider a table of this size to be overkill, but we think that it will come in quite handy to those who often work with more substantial stocks.

Just like we expected, the table can be moved up and down the column, and is also wholly adjustable – one can easily tilt it right or left at a 45° angle. It can also be moved some 26″ away from the unit’s chuck, which makes accommodating large workpieces even easier.

Power

The WEN 4227 has a strong 13.0 AMP motor that makes the unit more than suitable for the hardened professionals. As expected, it comes with variable speed controls, allowing one to choose between 12 different speed settings in a range between 180 and 2,940 RPM.  The lowest speed setting (180 RPM) shows us that the manufacturer intended this unit to be used for drilling metal – it cuts through tough materials like a knife through butter and delivers smooth and splinter-less holes.

It has a 5/8″ chuck that accepts a variety of drill bits, which adds to the model’s overall versatility. There’s also the so-called X-Pattern Laser system, which is easily visible and provides additional accuracy, while the integrated LED light allows working in areas with low visibility.

Powerful 13.0 AMP motor

Spacious and adjustable work table

N

X-Pattern Laser

Cons:

Using small drill bits is tricky

R

Things we liked about it

Fortunately, the bulkiness of this floor-mounted press drill comes with a particular advantage. It makes the whole unit very stable and secure, so you won’t have to worry about it falling on you while you’re drilling. Large size also removes the issues and frustrations that come with vibrations – with this model; you’ll be able to make only the most precise and accurate cuts.

We also liked the impressive adjustability and spaciousness of the unit’s work table, as well as its 5/8″ chuck and the integrated LED light and laser systems. The overall performance is a satisfactory one – the machine made short work of every material we threw at it, both soft and hard.

Q

Things we didn’t like

The WEN 4227 is one of the largest and heaviest devices of this type we’ve reviewed so far. This makes the model highly unsuitable for those with smaller workshops, as well as for those who plan to move their drill from time to time.

Our only other complaint is that the unit’s chuck jaws make using small drill buts quite tricky.  One can buy an accessory chuck to solve this problem, but we still have to mention it as a flaw.

General User Impressions

This brand has a dedicated user base that consists of thousands of people. Naturally, the opinions are quite diverse and they usually depend on a few factors that are not under Dewalt’s control. The general impression is good and most users love their DWM120k. On the other hand, there are plenty of people that have something against either its design or performance. As far as we are concerned, it’s a worthy investment if you’re willing to use its full potential instead of using it for occasional projects.

Conclusion

Those looking for a model that’s at the same time dependable and comes at a reasonable price should definitely consider WEN 4227 for purchase.

We highly recommend this unit to those who can afford it, as it is guaranteed to provide them with enough power to deal with both small and heavy-duty drilling operations. It is particularly suitable for those working with large stocks, due to its 14″ x 14″ adjustable work table.
