Good for

Kobalt has stepped up their game with their new 24V power tool combo kit series and 24V MAX brushless tool platform. Their engineers have tirelessly been working for two years on rebuilding not only the batteries, but each power tool from scratch. They have done a great job since the performance and specifications of their units are a match to known heavy-weights such as Milwaukee and DeWalt.

By opting for the more powerful brushless technology with a longer runtime, and a higher voltage, Kobalt has created a competitive series of power tools at a fair price. Their engineers have ingeniously moved some battery circuitry into the tools themselves and realigned the cells.

As a result, size and weight have not been compromised, so there is barely any difference between Ryobi 18V batteries and Kobalt 24V cells. But, aside from their solid performance and battery durability, the unmatched 5-year warranty Kobalt offers might be the biggest advantage Kobalt has over their competition.

Q

Not Recommended For

Even though Kobalt has continuously been introducing new additions to their 24V cordless powertools selection, their kits are more or less still comprised of basic tools like drivers, drills, and saws. One has the impression that their target consumers are homeowners and hobbyists. Professionals who are hoping to get absolutely everything their job requires in a Kobalt toolset might get disappointed.

One might consider it to be nitpicking, as the performance of their tools is quite satisfactory. But, if you are a contractor of any kind and are prone to relying only on one brand of tools, depending on your line of work, you might not be able to do so as your Kobalt kit might want to check some other brand’s sets.

Their line-up is fairly new, and their generous return and replacement policy is alluring, so one would certainly want to see Kobalt offer a bigger variety of tools. On the other hand, the fact that Ryobi basically decided to forget about their 18V and 20V Max series, is somewhat disappointing.

The most prominent feature of this kit is arguably the Kobalt 24V cordless brushless circular saw. The manufacturer took the traditional motor blueprint and reduced the length of the newest brushless motor. That way, Kobalt made the circular saw thinner while increasing performance at the same time.

The tool operates at 5400 rotations per minute, and, according to the manufacturer, it is the only cordless 6-1/2-inch circular saw that can saw through three 3/4-inch sheets of plywood. One could expect such cut depth from a 7-1/4-inch unit. Kobalt managed to achieve that by deftly positioning the shoe, spindle and the blade on the unit so that the user would be able to utilize the maximum potential of the blade.

You can rely on it for quick and authoritative cuts. The cut alignment is approximately as wide as the blade. The only downside of the circular saw would be the lack of a fan or vent that would clear the surface of sawdust.

The reciprocating saw that’s a part of the deal operates at 3100 strokes per minute with a 1-1/8-inch stroke. The shoe can be adjusted, and the unit also features a quick-release lever that allows for easy blade switches. The downside being that there is no auto-eject, but at least you don’t need any extra tools to remove the blade.

It’s quite a beast as it can effortlessly saw through hardwood, softwood, PVC, nails, metal – you name it. The lack of a rafter hook might disappoint some, but overall it is an excellent tool that is beloved by pros and DIYers alike.

The kit also comes with an impact driver and a drill/driver. Each tool is equipped with a built-in LED light and features an ergonomic, rubberized over-mold that allows for better control, and that minimizes fatigue. The brushless impact driver can deliver 1500 inch/pounds of torque which should be enough for your average driving applications.

The drill/driver is also powered by a brushless motor that can deliver 500 inch/lbs of torque which is suitable for light-duty work and more delicate applications. It also features a 2-speed gearbox and a variable speed trigger. The low gear reaches 500 RPM, and the high gear reaches 1850 RPM.

To make sure you’ll be able to work even in a not-so-illuminated area, Kobalt has included a LED work light that outputs 200 lumens. It also features a pivoting head and a hinge which make it a versatile and reliable tool.

The last tool of the kit would be the Kobalt 24-Volt Max USD power source adapter which although minor, can prove to be a lifesaver sometimes. There are also two 24V 2.0-Ah batteries and a charger included in the kit. Each of the tools comes with a 5-year limited warranty, while the batteries come with a 3-year limited warranty.

Our Rating: 4.5

What might be considered a more sizeable Kobalt combo kit as it includes a robust reciprocating saw that’ll cut through most materials. The unit operates at 3100 SPMs with a 1-1/8-inch stroke. The new revamped Kobalt reciprocating saw comes with an adjustable shoe.

It also has a quick release lever that allows the user to remove the blade (it is not auto-eject). That makes the blade switching an easy endeavor as you don’t need an additional tool for that. PVC, Metal, hardwood, softwood, nails, you name it – the Kobalt Tools 24V cordless brushless reciprocating saw can saw through it without much effort. The tool is cast with a rubber over-mold that is comfortable, but perhaps not tight enough to survive the potential damage of prolonged rubbing against materials.

The unit doesn’t feature an anti-vibration handle that can be seen on some high-end models – and it doesn’t really need one. Thanks to the brushless motor, vibration is reduced to a minimum. Pros are very fond of this tool – typically their only complaint being the lack of a rafter hook.

The unit is equipped with built-in LED illumination that helps the user achieve better accuracy and makes the job much easier in a dimly lit environment.

A nice addition to the toolkit is the 24V Kobalt Max LED work light. The unit is capable of producing two-hundred lumens and seems to throw quite far. It features a rotating head (135°) that ensures you have enough cover once you put the light down.

The tool also comes with Kobalt’s new 24V brushless 1/2″ drill/driver that’s packing 650 inch/lbs of torque and comes with the electronic finish function. It’s quite a heavy duty tool with a long run time. This unit also comes with a built-in LED work light that allows the user to achieve better accuracy.

Another prominent feature of the impact driver is its two-speed gearbox and variable speed tiger. The Kobalt 24-Volt 1/2″ Impact driver is equipped with a keyless, all-metal chuck that enables quick bit changes.

To round it all up, the manufacturer included a 24V brushless impact driver in the kit as well. Compared to its predecessor, it is 20% more compact and can deliver 40% more torque.  It’s biggest selling point could be its 3-speed gearbox. The low speed goes from 0 to 850 RPM, the medium gear goes from 0 to 2000 RPM. while the highest goes up to 2700 RPM.

That’s not all – the toolbox comes with an auxiliary handle, two-bit holders, a double-ended driver bit, a single-ended driver bit, two belt clips and a contractor’s bag.  Not to forget the charger and the two 24V Max 4.0 Ah Li-Ion cells that ought to supply you with enough power throughout the workday. Each battery has a LED indicator that lets you know how much power you have left.

The manufacturer is quite confident in their products, so each tool comes with a five-year limited warranty. The warranty on the batteries is a bit shorter as they have a 3-year limited warranty.

This two-piece kit doesn’t pack as much power as other Kobalt’s combos, so it doesn’t really come recommended for professional use, except for maybe as a backup tool. However, it can be of excellent service when it comes to some delicate tasks and home repairs.

The impact driver has a nice rubberized over-mold that allows for better control and increased comfort. The tool itself is light as a feather so you won’t be feeling any fatigue no matter how long you use it. The unit also features LED illumination that turns on as soon as you squeeze the trigger.

Even though it’s not the most powerful impact driver Kobalt has to offer, this 24V brushless impact driver is capable of delivering 1500 inch/lbs of torque, which ought to be enough for a variety of applications. The unit is equipped with an electronically controlled brushless motor that is built to last, so no wonder Kobalt offers such a generous warranty. The motor achieves 0 to 2600 RPM, without a load, and 3400 IPM.

The drill/driver that comes in the package is a piece of work itself. The brushless motor the unit is equipped with is capable of delivering 500 inch/lbs, which surely isn’t enough for heavy duty work, but is great for tasks that require a bit more delicacy.

Another feature that stands out is the two-speed gearbox and the variable speed trigger that make any job much easier. The low gear goes from 0 to 500 RPM while the high gear 1850 RPM. Admittedly, it is not as fast as it could be, but being that it’s a light-duty kit, it’s manageable.

Just like the impact driver, the drill/driver also has a proper ergonomic grip with a rubberized over mold that lets the user use the tool all day long without feeling fatigue. Of course, the light weight of the unit also plays a role. The runtime of both tools is above average, thanks to the excellent brushless motors.

The package comes with two belt clips with screws, an S2 drill bit, and two-bit holders with screws as well. It is always nice to see such neat accessories included in a kit as they are quite convenient. That’s not all of course as the kit includes a 1.5-Ah 24 V battery and a 45W charger.

The tools in the kit are compatible with all other Kobalt 24V Max cells and chargers. It takes approximately one hour to fully charge this particular cell, and the battery can be charged even in 20-degree weather. It has a LED level indicator which allows you to always see the status of the charge.

Both tools come with a five-year warranty which ought to give you peace of mind. The battery comes with a 3-year warranty and what’s particularly noteworthy – such a cell costs ten dollars so you can pack up at a reasonable price.

Most combo kits, no matter their size, feature a low-end drill. It certainly is not the case with this combo tool kit as the Kobalt 1/2″ 24VMax brushless cordless hammer drill is praised by professionals and hobbyists alike worldwide. The hammer drill is a solid tool as it has all the features of a high-end unit, including a 1/2-inch keyless chuck and a 24-position clutch.

The unit has a rubberized over-grip which makes it very comfortable to use – for prolonged periods of time as well. The usual push through direction of rotation selector is pretty straightforward. It is positioned high enough so the user wouldn’t continuously bump the tool out of gear – which is a common occurrence with a lot of other similar units.

There is also the 2-speed gearbox and the variable speed trigger that let the user set the right combo of speed and torque. The low gear delivers more torque at a slower speed, while the high gear is faster and better suitable for drilling that doesn’t require much torque. The drill ought to power through any task without bogging down or other similar difficulties.

The hamer drill has a 24-setting clutch that allows you to set the torque level for any task you might come across – it will help you deal with light drill work or rough concrete and brick surfaces. With its 26 000 BPM of power, you can rest assured that the brushless motor can take on heavy-duty tasks.

For increased safety and convenience, a built-in LED light, double-ended bit driver, and a belt clip bit holder have been included. The unit is as safe as they get. Not only that, but the whole thing weighs only 3 pounds, so it is an excellent tool for first-time DIYers as well, as wielding it all day long shouldn’t be a problem.

The other tool in the kit is the impressive 1/4″ impact driver that has a quick release collet and a brushless motor that is capable of delivering 1800 inch/lbs of torque. The unit can operate at three different gears. Low gear goes from 0 to 850 RPM, the medium one goes from 0 to 2700 RPM, while the high one goes from 0 to 2700 RPM.

It also features a neat finish function that increases productivity and neutralizes the chances of marring, while setting fasteners to the correct depth. That really comes in handy when you are dealing with delicate applications.

Each unit has built-in LED illumination that allows for better accuracy and is of great help when working in dimly lit corners. The package comes with a charger and a 24V Max 4.0-Ah Li-Ion cell that has a built-in LED-indicator so you can easily keep track of the charge. Kobalt provides a five-year limited warranty on both tools and a three-year limited warranty on the battery, which is much more than one would expect at this price.

Kobalt’s 24 brushless impact driver can hold a charge for about 70 minutes, which is about average for a tool of its magnitude. It also features LED illumination which ought to make the job go easier.

Brushless drill/drivers are no longer only reserved for the most expensive tool kits partially thanks to the Kobalt brushless 1/2-inch drill/driver. The model packs 1/4 more torque than its predecessor. Specifications wise, this unit stands out as it has the most powerful torque (650 inch/lbs) of all the tools in its price range.

How To Choose An Ideal Power Tool Combo Kit By Kobalt

If you are on your way to buy a Kobalt cordless tool, set you are not making a mistake, as they are a reputable manufacturer and are known for making some of the best cordless power tools on the market. But to make sure you won’t end up getting disappointed, there are a few things you should be on the lookout for. Consider each kit to be tailored for a specific purpose.

Why Do I Need Brushless Tools?

Brushless tools often come at a higher price, so hobbyists tend to cross them off their list just for that. For some, not buying a brushless kit is the right choice as they don’t really need the performance it offers. So what’s the difference between a brushless and a brushed unit?

The two kinds of motors are different at their core. A brushless motor allows the tool to adjust its performance according to the task being performed. Hence, brushless tools have better performance, last longer, and offer increased productivity.

If you plan on using the tools quite often or are looking to complete your home repair kit and not have to worry about it anymore, then going for a brushless kit isn’t a miss. Their major downside is their only downside when compared to a brushed tool, and that’s a noticeably higher price.

Batteries

Batteries are key when choosing a combo kit, and the same goes for any kobalt power tool combo kit. All of their tools are powered by the same kind of battery, so if you already have a Kobalt 24V cell lying around your workstation even better. The fact of the matter is, the ampere-hours of a cell vary from kit to kit, and the number of batteries as well.

Before choosing a kit, make sure its packing enough power. If you are a contractor, you might want to make sure the battery has enough ampere-hours. Some Kobalt kits come with batteries that have not-so-big a capacity, but it includes the exact tools you want. In that case, consider purchasing additional cells as some Kobalt 24 Max batteries are inexpensive and are worth every penny.

Accessories

They are not the most prominent feature of any kit, but they can make a difference. Some accessories are negligible while others can basically count as a tool on their own. If you are contemplating two different kits with the same tools, be sure to check what accessories they come with. So, when you can’t make up your mind, check for a contractor’s bag, belt clip, work light or a similar auxiliary that might help persuade you.

The Conclusion

Kobalt’s kits perhaps are not as diverse as those of the competition. The difference between kits is usually in the quantity, rather than the type of tools you get. Be as it may, with Kobalt, you are getting exactly what you’re paying for – the tools are just as they are described.

A customer appreciates honesty and the amount of torque, RPMs, SPMs and OPMs are the same as claimed on the box. With Kobalt, you are sure to get a quality brushless tool set at a reasonable price. Their brushless motors are their most significant selling point, but not the only one.

The 5-year limited warranty on tools and the 3-year limited warranty on batteries are absolutely praiseworthy. Kobalt’s tools have changed over time, but their customer policy hasn’t really changed, which is great since their return policies are known to be awesome.

Some craftsmen might not want to go for Kobalt because of the limited variety of the tools their offer, as a professional of a specific craft might not get what they are looking for. But their user-friendly design and budget-friendly price make Kobalt’s kits an excellent choice for DIYers who are just starting out or the ones who are looking to expand their collection. Homeowners in need of a repair kit won’t be disappointed either.
