Makita XRH05Z Review Summary:

If you have no other choice but to invest all your money into one cordless drill, the Makita XRH05Z might be the thing that you’re searching for. The power tools of this Japanese company are well-known for their efficiency, and that’s exactly why they are so popular with the users.

Available since 2014, the XRH05Z is still one of the best-selling cordless rotary hammers on today’s market. The reason behind that is the fact that it’s a high-grade machine that easily outperforms the most of its competitors, packing enough power to deal with any construction-related project.

But there’s only one way to find out the unit’s actual value for the money, and that’s by analyzing its features. We got one for ourselves and carefully examined its characteristics in detail while trying to find the benefits and disadvantages of owning it. Read on!

XRH05Z Specifications:

  • Weight – 12.25lbs
  • Dimensions – 11.5″ x 21.3″ x 6.9″
  • Max Speed – 1,200 RPM
  • Chuck Size – 1/2″
  • Voltage – 36 volts

Makita XRH05Z – The Basics

The heart of this unit is its powerful motor, capable of achieving 3.0 Joules of impact energy and 1,250 RPM of speed. As you can already guess, this allows one to easily tackle the heavy-duty projects – the XRH05Z makes short work of all kinds of materials, no matter how tough they are.

Just like many other drills of this type, it can also operate in three different modes and sports a torque-limiting clutch whose purpose is to prevent the gear damage. The design is compact and ergonomic, with the addition of a large trigger, a rotatable side-handle, and a LED light that allows working in dimly-lit areas.

The unit is also highly durable, as it sports Makita’s signature protection technology, as well as vibration-resistant for the increased operator comfort. Let’s check out the features:

The Features

The Design

One of the things that put Makita XRH05Z at the top of the line is its fantastic design. Sporting that well-known teal & black color combination, the device is highly ergonomic thanks to the inclusion of two comfortable handles. The one on the back is quite similar to those on the other rotary hammers, so it’s the front one that steals the show – it’s a detachable, 360-degree rotatable side-handle that’s guaranteed to make your life easier.

Additional comfort is provided by the fact that the handles are capable of absorbing the vibrations, as well as with the presence of a large 2-finger trigger. To make the device durable, Makita opted to include their well-known Extreme Protection Technology (XPT), which increases the unit’s resistance to dust and water and thus gives it a longer lifespan. This feature is of crucial importance if you’re working in harsh conditions on a daily basis.

Power

Makita’s built-in motor provides this drill with enough power to deal with a variety of dense materials. It can achieve 0-5,000 BPM and 1,250 RPM, which is more than enough to assist you with making holes in concrete or steel. You’ll be able to choose one of three working modes – “Hammering only,” “Rotation only,” and “Hammering with rotation.” This gives the user a lot more flexibility and turns the XRH05Z into a highly versatile machine.

The torque-limiting clutch, on the other hand, is there to protect the unit’s gears by instantly disengaging them in case the bit binds. We were quite pleased to see the SPCC (Star Protection Computer Controls), too – they will protect the machine from overheating, overloading, and over-discharging.

Battery

For this unit, you’ll have to purchase two 18V LXT batteries – they’re not included in the package. They will provide the drill with optimum run time and power, and should be more than sufficient for all of your DIY or professional projects.

R

Things we liked about it

The pros definitely outweigh the cons here – the Makita XRH05Z is powerful enough and durable enough to be worthy of considering for purchase. In fact, it is one of the most efficient tools of this type of the market, as it is highly effective when it comes to drilling through masonry, wood, and steel.

Its compact and ergonomic design allow easy handling, while its sturdy housing, combined with Makita’s XPT technology, protects the device from damage that could occur on the job site. With three different modes of operation, a shank that can be rotated into 40 different positions, built-in LED light, and a torque-limiting clutch, the Makita XRH05Z stands as one of the company’s most well-made tools so far.

Q

Things we didn’t like

Since it’s packed with numerous features and has a high-quality build, the model comes at a competitive price. It’s the priciest rotary hammer drill we have reviewed so far, and as such will be left out of reach of many handymen.

The lack of batteries in the package was a pretty big disappointment for us, especially when we consider the unit’s price. You’ll have to either buy the batteries or buy the kit that includes two of them together with the charger and a carrying bag.

What Users Say About The Makita XRH05Z

User reviews for this unit are overwhelmingly positive, with most people confirming that the Makita XRH05Z has easily outperformed all other drills they previously owned. They are praising both the power and the design of this device, and are especially pleased with the rotatable handle and the ability to choose from three operating modes.

The fact that this is a cordless device is yet another advantage, with users saying that they don’t have to worry about running an extension cord for their rotary hammer no more.

Conclusion

We finally know why Makita XRH05Z has earned the nickname of an “industry-leading drill”. The unit is indeed one of the best rotary hammer drills we’ve seen so far, as it excelled in every field we tested it in and proved to be efficient, reliable, and durable.

Even though it’s expensive, it’s worth every cent of its price – purchasing it can’t turn out as a mistake.
