Makita 5402NA – The Basics

If you’re looking for a decent power tool with a couple of high-end features, this model might be the one. It has a powerful 15-amp motor which delivers up to 2200 RPM. As you can tell, it packs more than enough power to cut through pressure treated wood like a hot knife through butter. The machine is quite easy to use due to its simplistic design and well-written user manual.

When it comes to the cutting capacity, it’s pretty large. It will cut 6x material at 90 degrees, and 4 x materials at 45 degrees. The unit also features a lock for hassle-free blade changing, which comes in handy if you’re an absolute beginner. The thing that makes this model worth checking out is the low noise level of only 87dB.

Makita 5402NA Features

The design

While most of these machines look quite similar to each other, this one stands out as a bit different. The first thing many people notice is the peculiar thin design. It’s a great innovation because it relieves some of the user’s stress during work. The handle grip is made of hard plastic which is both an advantage and a shortcoming. The bad thing about it is that it won’t decrease or eliminate the vibrations coming through the blade. On the other hand, it’s good because the gap is quite big and allows you to move your hand and adjust it as you wish thus relieving some pressure along the way.

As we already said, the low noise level is the secret weapon of this particular model. However, many people assume that it’s silent which is completely wrong. The difference between silent and low-noise is huge. Therefore, don’t expect a silent machine but rather a low-noise one. The 87dB is still a noticeable level of noise, to say the least.

Safety

Makita is a well-known company, and high-end safety measures are expected in most of their power tools. This particular one doesn’t feature any unusual or impressive safety mechanisms, but it still has a healthy amount of safety measures integrated. The blade stabilizer is more of a standard feature than it is a safety measure, but it helps a lot in the safety department as well. Needless to say, an unstable machine is a ticking bomb ready to go off at any moment. The 5402NA also has an electric brake that’s responsible for stopping the blade as soon as you turn the machine off.

Other features

There aren’t many other features left. The blade lock is a great addition to an already versatile machine. It’s an easy-to-use method which allows you to swap the blades without using an excessive amount of additional tools.

Things we liked about the Makita 5402NA

The smoothness of performance is one of the main reasons why we chose this particular model. Once you turn it on and start cutting, the capacity, stability, and endurance become quite apparent. Even though it has a somewhat premium price, it’s definitely worth every penny as long as you use the full potential of its features.

The stability of a circular saw is one of the most important quality factors. Luckily, this unit is very stable and quite easy to get a hold of. Therefore, it’s a great solution both for DIY-ers and professionals. However, DIY enthusiasts might have a problem with the price of this product.

Q

Things we didn’t like

Even though there aren’t many shortcomings, the low RPM output is a double-edged sword. It’s good for low power consumption and accurate cuts, but it’s not recommended for cutting anything else but wood. Therefore, even if you find a proper blade for cutting metal, it’s going to be a slow cut due to the low RPM output. We strongly recommend avoiding other materials except for wood.

The price is okay, but one cannot say it’s a cheap piece of equipment. People who are familiar with its quality usually comprehend the reason behind the hefty price, but the inexperienced ones might get surprised.

What Users Say About The Makita 5402NA

Makita is always a good choice when it comes to power tools. A lot of people seem pretty satisfied with the performance of the 5402NA. As we said, some users expected a lower price, but it’s not going to happen for few reasons. The biggest reasons are the high-quality components inside the unit which aren’t cheap in the first place.

Conclusion

If you’re a professional that wants to refresh their cupboard with a new power tool, check this particular one out, it has plenty of features to offer. On the other hand, if you’re an enthusiast who occasionally decides to tackle a project or two, this unit might be overkill.

The key is in using the full potential of the 5402NA. In case you cannot use everything this circular saw has to offer, there are other models on the market that are significantly cheaper but still worth investing in.
