DeWalt DW124 Review Summary:

Founded more than 90 years ago, DeWalt is still one of America’s most famous manufacturers of tools. They’re well known for the quality of their wrenches, saws, utility knives, pliers, drills, and have even managed to manufacture an Android-powered smartphone intended for contractors.

When it comes to corded right angle drills, they have a pretty broad range of differently priced devices – all the way from the budget ones to those with a premium build quality. The one we’ll be reviewing here belongs to the premium category – its name is DeWalt DW124 and it’s a unit packed with numerous interesting features.

To find out if it’s worth all that money, we’ll be analyzing the tool’s design, its power, ease of operation, warranty, and all those little features that typically come with expensive drills. Join us and let’s check out the newest addition to DeWalt’s line of right angle drills together!

Specifications:

  • Weight – 13.5lbs
  • Dimensions – 6″ x 12″ x 27″
  • Chuck Size – 1/2″
  • No Load Speed – 300/1,200 RPM
  • Motor Power – 11.5 AMP

DeWalt DW124 – The Basics

During our testing, we’ve noticed that the DeWalt DW124 easily and quickly handles holes of all sizes. It features a truly intuitive design whose purpose is to allow greater control and leverage during the drilling, so it’s pretty easy to tackle heavy-duty jobs with it.

The thing that makes this possible is the unit’s powerful 11.5 AMP motor with a triple-gear reduction control, which is capable of achieving the maximum of 1,200 RPM. With DW124, one can easily find the right amount of torque for any kind of job. The mechanical clutch, on the other hand, is there to provide the user with the full control of reactionary torque when using the machine in low gear.

Sounds impressive? If the answer is affirmative, then read on and find out everything about the model’s features.

The Features

The Design

Just like we expected from DeWalt, the DW124 features a design that’s ergonomic and that makes the unit feel great in hands. Sporting the well-known signature yellow color, this right angle drill weighs just a bit more than 13 pounds – it’s not the most portable drill of this type on the market. Still, working with it is made easier by the presence of two convenient handles.

The front handle is situated on the top of the device and is fully adjustable – right-handed people are supposed to hold it with their right hand while operating the drill. The side handle, which is included in the package, has two positions and is there to provide the user with maximum control and leverage during drilling at awkward angles.

Power

The thing that makes DW124 so powerful is its 11.5 AMP motor, which can achieve the maximum RPM of 1,200 and thus help the user with a myriad of drilling tasks. Based on the requirements of the current application, the user can switch between 2 mechanically controlled speeds and therefore apply the right amount of RPM/torque.

This is a triple-gear reduction motor – gear stress is significantly reduced during operation. We should also mention the mechanical slip-clutch that gives the user better control of reactionary torque.

Warranty

Not only did DeWalt include a generous 3-year limited warranty, but it also provides one year of the free service contract and a 90-day money back guarantee. This is pretty impressive, and yet another advantage that comes with purchasing the DW124.

Things we liked about it

As you can see from the above, the DeWalt DW124 is a fantastic right angle drill – not only does it sports an ergonomic design, but it’s also powerful enough for a plethora of different drilling tasks.

We love its convenient handles that provide the user with easy handling, as well as the fact that they’re fully adjustable. Furthermore, we were pleased to see the inclusion of a powerful motor with high torque and RPM values, as well as the ability to conveniently change the gears according to the requirements of the task at hand.

The fact that this drill comes with a generous warranty shows us that DeWalt deems the unit as robust and durable – they wouldn’t put a 3-year warranty on a model that’s prone to frequent breaks and issues.

Q

Things we didn’t like

Even though the drill features a couple of convenient handles, we still can’t overlook the fact that DW124 was heavier than we expected. Its weight is typical for heavy-duty right angle drills and might cause fatigue after prolonged use.

Unlike some other DeWalt drills we’ve tested, this one doesn’t come with a case. Seeing as DW124 is one of the most expensive products of this type on the market, we think that the fact that it’s sold without a dedicated case is a major flaw and something we definitely didn’t expect from a reputable company such as DeWalt.

What Users Say About The DeWalt DW124

Even though it’s quite expensive and comes with a couple of (minor) drawbacks, the DeWalt DW124 has received almost universal acclaim from the users. They praise the unit’s high-quality construction and its super-smooth efficiency that has left them thoroughly impressed.

The users are saying that DW124 packs a lot of power and thus delivers an excellent performance, no matter the toughness of the surface. They’re especially pleased with the unit’s warranty, as well as with the fact that it comes with one year of the free service contract provided by DeWalt.

Conclusion

Just like we expected, the DW124 is yet another excellent right angle drill from DeWalt. Featuring some serious power and a convenient, easy-to-operate design, this model is capable of assisting the user with all possible drilling and fastening operations.

Even though it’s a bit pricey, we predict a bright future for it – every serious handyman will recognize the unit’s fantastic value for the money and make it an inseparable part of his toolbox.
