DeWalt DWD460 Review Summary:

DeWalt is undoubtedly a company with a long history of success – it’s one of the most popular brands of power tools in the US. Their drills, whether they’re corded or cordless, always come with the same amount of efficiency and durability, and these two things are the main reasons behind the brand’s immense popularity.

And when it comes to right angle drills, their DWD460 is one that definitely deserves attention. Unlike many other units of this type on the market, this is a heavy-duty right angle drill, and as such, it comes with a premium build quality and a ton of exciting features.

Due to the requests of our readers, we have decided to carefully analyze this peculiar machine and help you determine if it’s the right choice for your right-angle drilling needs. We tested all of its features and found all of its benefits and flaws – here they are:

Specifications:

  • Weight – 11.8lbs
  • Dimensions – 10.8″ x 19.2″ x 5.7″
  • Chuck Size – 1/2″
  • Motor Power – 11 AMP
  • Voltage – 120 volts

DeWalt DWD460 – The Basics

As you can see from the specifications list, the DeWalt DWD460 is a very robust tool. It provides the user with a very powerful performance when it comes to drilling large holes, and as such it’s ideal for HVAC installers, electricians, plumbers, and woodworkers.

The model provides exceptional durability and control with its heavy-duty build quality, two variable speed ranges, and a rubberized grip that allows extended use. One of its most innovative features is the Bind-Up Control which senses a stall in bind-up situations and simply adjusts the torque to a more manageable level. A combination of a ball-bearing construction and metal gear housing guarantees years of reliable use.

Let’s take a closer look at the features and find out the DeWalt DWD460’s value for the money:

The Features

The Design

As you can see from the pictures, the DeWalt DWD460 is a heavy-duty right angle drill – it weighs over 10 pounds and measures close to 20″ in length. Therefore, we can’t really call this unit portable or lightweight, but its dimensions still make it compact enough for it to be non-bulky and quite easy to carry around.

The main handle has a convenient position on the top of the unit and is fully adjustable. There’s also a side handle with two positions, whose purpose is to increase the user’s control over the unit during use. It decreases the (already high) possibility of fatigue and hand cramps caused by long drilling sessions.

The overall build quality of this drill is just amazing – mechanical damage is not something to worry about with DeWalt DWD460.

Power

The unit is powered by the manufacturer’s 11.0 AMP motor that’s powered via an electric cord. Its power rating stands at 1015 watts, which is a pretty good indicator of the machine’s capability to generate high torques. There are two variable speed-ranges here – 0-330 RPM and 0-1300 RPM, allowing the user to quickly select the speed range required for a particular application. The unit’s ability to deliver high torque and powerful rotations make it perfect for all kinds of drilling operations.

However, the drill’s premier feature is the so-called Bind-Up Control. The DWD460 has a built-in electronic sensor that senses the sudden tool movement when the bit binds, immediately reducing the torque output in such scenarios. The feature works in all gears and is probably the only high-gear protection on any device of this kind on the market.

Drilling Wood With DeWalt Right Angle Drill

For heavy-duty jobs

N

Durable construction

N

Powerful motor

N

Bind-Up Control feature

Cons:

N

Quite expensive

N

Unusable when away from a power outlet

R

Things we liked about it

This heavy-duty right angle drill excelled in almost every field we tested it in. Contractors and advanced DIY enthusiasts are bound to fall in love with the unit’s robust and durable build quality. Its powerful motor, on the other hand, makes the machine fully-capable of tackling all kinds of drilling tasks, making it perfectly suitable for, say, large framing applications. The fact that it can make holes of up to 6″ in diameter makes it one of the most efficient devices of this type on the market.

Other things that deserve praise are the innovative Bind-Up Control feature (high-gear protection) and the fact that the machine comes with a very generous 3-year warranty.  The rubber-coated handle, on the other hand, provides the user with a confident and secure grip, while the high-quality housing protects the unit’s vital parts from the mechanical damage. Pretty impressive, wouldn’t you say?

Q

Things we didn’t like

The thing that will put DWD460 out of reach to many handymen is, unfortunately, its high price. This unit is among the most expensive right angle drills we’ve tested so far – its durable construction and heavy-duty performance are the main reasons behind its price.

Even though it comes with a 10-foot cord, the unit is not as nearly as portable as its battery-powered cousins. Those who have to drill in high places should look elsewhere, as well as those who don’t work on heavy-duty projects on a daily basis.

What Users Say About The DeWalt DWD460

Those who decided to fork out and get this drill are thoroughly impressed with its design, power, and functions. The users are praising its every feature – whether that’s the powerful 11 AMP motor, the variable speed-ranges, the durable metal-gear housing, the adjustable handle, or the innovative Bind-Up Control feature.

Users are especially fascinated with how well the model handles various types of drilling tasks, saying that its robust motor completes every job with no hassle or frustration.

Conclusion

The DeWalt DWD460 is a well-designed, high-performance, and high-quality corded right angle drill intended for heavy-duty jobs. It boasts a number of useful features, with the Bind-Up Control being one that sets it above the competition.

Its excellent safety profile, high energy-efficiency, and the fantastic cost-performance ratio make it the best drill of this type on the market, and as such, it deserves our sincere recommendation.
