Review Summary:

Are you a homeowner that wants to tackle a big painting project? Do you want to save money by doing it yourself, and save time by replacing your rollers and brushes with a sprayer? If the answer is yes, we might have the solution for you. We will be looking at a few different airless units that can make a whole host of remodel jobs much easier.

First in line is the Magnum 262800 X5, a model that comes from highly regarded manufacturer Graco. This unit has a good set of features and performs well with many different materials. If light duty jobs around the house are what you’re after, this machine might be the one for you. Read on to find out more about it in our full review below.

Graco Magnum X5 Airless Paint Sprayer – The Basics

To cover large areas like fences, sheds, walls and garages, the Magnum X5 comes with a metal SG2 gun for spray painting. This gun has a durable full trigger and can work with tips up to 0.015″. In combination with a 515 RAC IV tip, you’ll be able to pump out 0.27 gallons of material per minute. The flexible intake tube lets you work with 1 and 5-gallon containers so that you don’t have to refill as often.

The spraying gun is connected to the central unit through the included 25 feet of DuraFlex hose. If you want to spend less time moving around, you can use a hose that’s up to 75 feet without compromising finish quality or stressing the motor.

Since this is a project model, its recommended annual usage is 125 gallons. We think that is more than enough to tackle any project around an average size house. If you want an airless sprayer that can handle light contracting jobs, you ought to invest a bit more money and get a “Pro” model from Graco’s lineup. With that said, the 1/2 horsepower motor at the heart of the Magnum 262800 X5¬† can put out 3000 PSI of pressure which is more than enough for home projects.

When it comes to initial setup, it was a breeze. Just like other Graco models, this paint sprayer has quick instructions attached to the unit. Besides that, it comes with an instructional DVD and a full user manual.

The Features

Stainless Steel Pump

One of the most important aspects of any paint machine is that its made out of quality parts. The pump in this unit has a stainless steel piston which ensures a good lifespan and reliable performance.

Easy Cleaning

The Power Flush adapter that comes with the Graco Magnum X5 attaches easily to your garden hose and speeds up cleaning. If you’ve saved time painting, why not save time while washing your tools? A job that once took half an hour or more now takes ten minutes at the most.

Simplified Priming

This airless model from Graco offers a PushPrimer feature. What this does is ensure a quick and straightforward priming while reducing the number of steps that need to be taken.

Versatility

When it comes to coatings, this paint sprayer can work with many different materials. It handles anything from stains to acrylics and latex. However, you shouldn’t use solvent-based lacquers block fillers and materials that have textures particles.

Adjustable Pressure Control

With a knob located next to the flexible intake tube, you can fine-tune pressure. The max output of this model is 3000 PSI. You can set this knob to anything between the “Low Spray” and “Hi Spray” setting, but there are also cleaning and roller settings. This adjustable control lets you get the best finish with the material you are using.

Lightweight Design

The Graco Magnum 262800 X5 comes with a stand that keeps this unit in place as well as a handle for easier transport. Moreover, this model has a compact size which doesn’t take up a lot of room when it comes time to store it.

SG2 Spray Gun & Reversible Tip

Included with Graco’s “Project” and “DIY” models is the SG2 gun which comes with a reversible tip – a 515. This combination is ideal for medium thickness coatings and gives a pattern size of 10-12 inches in width. If you get a clog, all you have to do is turn the tip around and blow it out. Finally, for a better finish, there’s a filter in the handle of this paint gun that catches larger particles.

Who Can Use This Spray Painter?

Judging by the specifications of this model, DIY users are the target demographic. With a recommended output of 125 gallons per year, you can handle the occasional household project.

The tip included with this sprayer performs best with thin and medium materials. For instance, acrylic and latex paints used for walls, sidings, and wood finishing.

Using the Graco Magnum X5, you’ll be able to refresh your home and keep it looking like new. An important thing to note for beginners is that you will need some time to develop technique and get the hang of this unit.

Another situation where this model might be useful is property maintenance. For those that like to save money by doing repairs on their rentals, this could be an affordable option.  On the other hand, if you want a paint machine for construction jobs, this is not the one for you. You can exceed the recommended usage with careful maintenance and use, but you will most likely end up overworking the motor. We feel it is a better choice to save up more money and get at least an entry-level unit for professionals.

What We Didn’t Like

With such a low price some issues are bound to surface. What we noticed during our short testing phase is that the Magnum X5 can clog with thicker materials. Although the RAC tip is quick to unclog, blockages can happen more often than we would like to see. The solution to this problem is always to check whether your material of choice works with this paint sprayer. With this model being only 13 pounds, you might experience some issue with vibration at higher PSI. We noticed that this unit tends to move around a bit.

Even though there are a few features for easier cleaning, you might end spending more time washing this machine than doing actual work. Finally, over-spray can also be a concern with this model. The best way to deal with this is to make test runs, avoid windy days if painting outside and to mask everything carefully.

The FAQ

Can I use thicker texture paint with this sprayer?
It is not recommended because of two things. First of all, the tip size limit (0.015″) and secondly, you will experience clogs often. This can be mended by thinning your coating or using a lighter material for your project.
Are the instruction easy to follow?
Yes they are. What’s more, you will get an instructional DVD, quick start guide and full manual with this model. Most people don’t have problems following the instructions.
Can I use latex paint to do rooms?
You can use both latex and acrylic coatings. This unit also supports a roller attachment for doing interiors.
Will this sprayer work for small areas/projects?
No. The 515 tip that comes with this model has a pattern size of 10-12 inches which is best for larger surfaces. A 115, 215 or 315 might be better suited.

What do The Users Say?

There are many reviews for the Graco Magnum X5 online, but opinions are divided. An issue often mentioned is the build quality, which we noticed ourselves. In the rarest of cases, this can result in a unit that won’t start without troubleshooting.

That is why you should always test tools out as soon as possible and make sure you’re within warranty if you want to get a return.

Other than that, people report that thicker coatings need to be thinned out with water to avoid blockages in the SG2 gun. Furthermore, over-spray can also be a problem when working indoors.

Conclusion

If you want a paint sprayer that can cover large areas quickly, you should consider purchasing the Graco X5. But, if you want one that can do small projects with precision out of the box, you will need to look elsewhere or buy smaller tips.

Since this is not a top of the line product, you will have to choose materials carefully. Consider this unit’s specifications to avoid clogs and downtime while painting.
All in all, build quality is not the best, but that’s often the case at this price point. To avoid disappointment, you should find out what this airless sprayer is capable of and what you intend to use it for.
