Airless Paint Sprayers FAQs

Airless Paint Sprayer Reviews and Buying Guide

More portable than a pneumatic machine, and with greater power than a turbine unit — the airless paint sprayer (sometimes referred to as a hydraulic pump sprayer) is the choice of both DIY and trade-pros seeking the ultimate fast-covering power painter.Incorporating models from compact handheld sprayers through to behemoth-like gasoline-driven machines, the airless category has a tool for virtually every home, garage, renovation, and commercial application.

What Is an Airless Sprayer?

Turbine units utilize a series of fans to propel paint, pneumatic machines use a compressor, and airless sprayers employ a hydraulic pump.

Think of it like this.

It’s a beautiful summer’s day, and due to the incredibly dry weather, your prized rosebed is in need of some much-needed hydration. So, you pull out your hose from the garage, turn on the water, and give your flora a welcome drink.

However, when you satiate your beloved plants, you don’t deliver the water in a powerful narrow jet stream — unless you want to destroy the plant and disperse soil all over the place. Instead, you adjust the nozzle to create a fine spray for a precise and delicate touch. Although, if you’re anything like me, you lost your hose nozzle years ago and instead just squeeze your thumb over the hose end.

This is identical to the function of an airless sprayer (well, without the paint, which your roses wouldn’t appreciate being coated with).

Instead of a faucet delivering the pressure, the airless power painter uses a pump section to increase the internal load inside the unit. Typically electrically driven — although some industrial models like the Graco GH230 are fueled by gasoline — these machines utilize this pressure to drive your coating medium along a hose into the spray gun. Here, the nozzle tip (instead of your thumb) compresses and disperses the paint into the air — creating atomization — which forms a fine spray pattern.

Airless machines first hit the market in 1958, when the paint spraying specialists Graco introduced the Hydra-Spray. For the first time, DIYers and trade users were able to use a power-painter without the use of compressed air or turbines.

60 years later, airless sprayers are the go-to machines for enthusiasts who want a more portable unit than compressor painters. Their immense pressure and unmatched throughput of coating mediums mean they’re particularly suited to larger projects — providing faster coverage than turbine or pneumatics.

Types of Airless Spray Equipment

Generally speaking, airless painting systems come in two forms — handheld and externally-driven.
Handheld Airless Spray Painters

The most compact and portable of all the airless units. These innovative machines — typically no larger than a standard SDS drill — incorporate the hydraulic pump into the main body of the shooter. The gun also houses a detachable paint container, which you fill with your coating medium prior to the commencement of your projects.

The advantage of this format is that you don’t have the inconvenience of a bulky floor-sitting or cart-mounted external hydraulic unit to move around. This makes them ideal as an interior home-use unit — able to be pulled out of your kitchen cupboard whenever you need to paint.

However, there is a significant weight-cost. Not only are you holding a spray gun, but also a hefty pump and around 1.5 quarts of paint. This means the machines aren’t ideal for extensive projects unless you have immensely strong arms that are unlikely to suffer from fatigue.

Furthermore, this weight issue also means that the size of the internal hydraulic pump has to be restricted — otherwise, it would simply have too much mass to hold in one hand. Hence, you’ll struggle to find a unit with an output greater than 2000 PSI, compared to the 3000 PSI-plus of the externally driven sprayers.

This results in handheld airless units not providing such rapid coverage as their external counterparts, and achieves slightly less fine atomization.

Due to the above, they remain something of an anomaly in the spraying niche, and are yet to gain significant popularity. DIYers looking for a compact machine typically opt for handheld turbine machines, which are considerably lighter on the pocket, more straightforward in operation, and are lighter to wield.

That said, Graco, the inventor of the world’s first airless sprayer, has a whole range of handhelds, including the remarkably innovative cordless unit, the Ultra Max 17M367.

Externally-Driven Airless Spray Painters

The most popular format of hydraulic painters, externally-driven sprayers feature a ground-sitting or cart-mounted powerhouse to propel the paint. This is connected to a spray gun via a hose, which then delivers and atomizes the coating material.

As it’s separate from the shooter, the pump has no restrictions on size and concomitant weight, meaning that DIY units such as the Graco Magnum X5, can knock out an eye-watering 3000 PSI. This allows these airless sprayers to deliver seriously rapid coverage and ultra-fine atomization — making light work of extensive and time-sensitive projects.

This makes the spray gun impressively lightweight — but there’s more.

Externally-driven airless spray guns don’t incorporate a paint cup. Instead, via a suction hose, the coating medium is drawn through the pump directly from an original container — although some machines like the Wagner Control Pro 130 utilize a floor-sitting hopper that you fill with paint.

Hence, externally-driven sprayers offer the lightest guns in the painting niche — making them ideal for users who lack arm strength or stamina.

Why Choose an Airless Paint Gun?

As mentioned earlier in this airless paint sprayer review, hydraulic machines deliver paint at immense pressure.

If you take the average output of an airless sprayer to be 3000 PSI, this is substantially more powerful than the 10 PSI of HVLP units and the 20 to 40 PSI of standard pneumatic guns.

Naturally, higher power means a greater velocity of delivery — meaning they provide coverage more swiftly than any other power-painting format. This is why many property developers, both residential and commercial, favor these sprayers — as they can speedily cover vast swathes of interior and exterior walls, ceilings, and fences. Furthermore, their beefy nature permits some industrial units — like the Ultra Max II 695 — to run more than one gun, meaning a whole team of tradespeople can work from one machine.

Additionally, their immense brawn permits the majority of airless sprayers to propel the most viscous of paints with no thinning. Again, this is particularly useful for building renovators, where the most commonly used mediums of drywall compounds, block-wall fillers, elastomerics, epoxies, and latexes are of high density.

Furthermore, high pressure promotes serious atomization. The grunty power permits the use of smaller diameter tips than turbines and pneumatics — forcing the coating medium through a narrow chamber creates a fine mist, leading to a stipple-free, smooth coat.

While not exhaustive, here are the advantages and disadvantages of airless spray machines.

Advantages of Airless Spraying
  • Speed — faster than turbines or pneumatic sprayers.
  • Fine atomization — delivering the smoothest of coats.
  • Multi-medium capability — can spray all paints without thinning.
  • Control — adjustable pressure output.
  • Portability — even external-drives are easier to transport than compressors.
  • Versatile — there’s a machine for every job and budget.
  • Multi-gun — you can run more than one shooter off some units.
  • Lightweight — external-drive guns have no internal motor or paint cup,
  • Direct draw — pulling paint from an original can means no refilling.
Disadvantages of Airless Spraying
  • Overspray — more wastage than with an HVLP machine.
  • Injection injury — high pressure increases the risk of skin damage.
  • Pre and post-project work — priming and cleaning times are longer than pneumatic and turbine units.
  • Medium-to-large job-specific — the immense power and volume delivery makes them impractical for small, fine-finishing work.

Who Should Use an Airless Sprayer?

The number of models in the airless spraying category is vast, meaning that there is a machine to suit virtually every power-painting enthusiast — budget machines for casual and infrequent users, DIY units for home-improvers, pro-grade sprayers for tradespersons, and industrial-grade tools for hardcore commercial projects. For tips, tricks and advice, check out my How to Use and Set-Up an Airless Sprayer.

In all cases, airless spraying units are ideal for those users looking to address:

  • Fencing.
  • Decking.
  • Walls.
  • Ceilings.
  • Outbuildings.
  • Doors.
  • Cinder blocks.
  • Boats.
  • Soffits.
  • Drywalls.
  • Fascias.

That said, I have to admit in this airless spray gun review that, like Kanye West, skinny jeans, and sushi — they’re not for everyone.

Aspiring painters looking for a straightforward, straight-outta-the-box, affordable machine would be better looking at a turbine sprayer. Additionally, pro-users seeking the ultimate in finish, versatile tailorability, and customization should angle towards pneumatic paint guns.

What to Look for In An Airless Spraying Machine

Trying to compare airless paint sprayers and select the best machine is akin to trying to choose your favorite child — although for me that’s simple, as my youngest is an absolute pain in the ass. However, there are some factors to consider when looking for the most suitable unit, to ensure that it will meet both you and your project’s demands.
Format
Handheld or externally-driven is the question. For small to medium scale projects, an airless handheld is the way forward. They require less set-up time than their larger counterparts and are more portable. However, bear in mind that they carry significant weight — meaning they’re not ideal for those users with little strength or for seniors.Externally-driven machines can cope with mammoth projects, require no refilling, and deliver greater atomization than their handheld cousins.
Power Output
Greater power means faster delivery and finer atomization. That said, the grunt isn’t such a great concern with airless machines as it is with turbines and pneumatics. Even the most timid of handheld units knock-out around 1500 PSI, which is suitable for propelling dense mediums such as chalk and latex-based paint. However, if you’re planning on utilizing paints with seriously high-viscosity, like epoxies and elastomerics — you’ll need a machine with around 2500 PSI-plus.
Nozzle Size
Again, when making an airless paint sprayer comparison, the nozzle size isn’t a big issue as with turbines and pneumatics.Admittedly, it’s the business end of the machine — it controls the spray size, intensity, and atomization level. However, due to the high PSI output of airless painters, they can propel dense mediums, such as latex, with a relatively small tip diameter.Hence, while a turbine unit requires at least a 0.016-inch nozzle for viscous paints, an airless machine can more than adequately deliver thick mediums through a 0.012-inch tip.Of more concern is the size of the spray fan emitted from the tip.Their sizes are typically indicated by a series of three numbers — such as 517. In this example, the first number details the radius of the fan, so five inches (10-inch diameter). The second explains the diameter of the nozzle itself in one-thousandths of an inch — here, 0.017 inches.Hence, for larger projects, usually, you would choose a large fan that would provide swifter coverage, such as a 517 or 617. For smaller work, you’d select a narrower spray, like a 317 or 217.While you can purchase various sized tips from the manufacturer as an additional purchase, it’s worth checking whether your chosen airless sprayer comes with more than one nozzle end.
Hose and Cord Length

The length of the mains cord and hose is crucial. The longer these essential components, the further away you can be from a power outlet and, in the case of externally-driven hydraulics, the less frequently you need to relocate the base unit. Although conversely, too much redundant hose and power lead can be a hassle — forming a tripping or strangulation hazard.

Some handheld units, such as the 17M363, are powered by lithium-ion cells — meaning you’re not tethered to the wall nor bound by hose size. But these machines are exceptions rather than the norm.

In addition to the supplied hose, I’d suggest also checking the maximum hose length supported by the airless sprayer. For example, the mighty Graco 210 ES arrives with a 50-foot DuraFlex hose, yet is compatible with up to 200 feet. This means that, should you wish, you can later upgrade to a lengthier hose with no loss of performance.

Time-Saving Features

One of the main reasons why many DIY and pro-users opt for either turbine or pneumatic machines instead of airless units, is that the latter requires significantly more preparation, maintenance, and post-project attention than their counterparts.

Airless sprayers require priming to ensure the paint is flowing thoroughly before use, the high pressure and abrasive materials powering through the pump can cause degradation, and the entire system needs flushing to remove detritus and paint post-job completion.

Understanding these headaches, many of the high-end manufacturers have incorporated features that make airless units more user friendly. While not exhaustive, look out for key features such as:

  • Easy-priming — many models, such as the Wagner 170, feature a single-button-press priming feature.
  • Auto-oiler — allows you to lubricate the pump and components without dismantling the machine.
  • Power Flush — fittings that enable you to hook the unit up to a standard garden hose, and rapidly clean the system with water.
Airless Sprayer Mounting

While externally-driven airless sprayers are powerful — this comes with the concomitant cost of being heavy, reducing their portability.

At the very least, look for a unit mounted on skids or feet, preferably with a carry handle. This ensures that the unit is protected from ground-dwelling dirt, dust, detritus, and water — and also allows for straightforward transportation.

If you have the space, it’s worth considering a unit that’s cart-mounted — allowing you to effortlessly move the hefty sprayer on those larger projects. Some machines, like the Titan Impact 840 come with pneumatic tires — making them ideal for rough construction site work.

Additional Considerations
On top of the factors listed above for choosing the best airless spray gun, other characteristics that may be worthy of consideration include:

  • pray fan width — larger promotes more rapid coverage.
  • Accessories — additional tips, brushes, wrench, storage case.
  • Tool-free maintenance — some machines permit rapid pump replacement with no tools.
  • Length of warranty.
  • Corded or cordless (for handheld models).
  • Variable pressure — to suit your coating medium.
  • Choice of spray patterns — to suit up-and-down or side-to-side strokes.
  • Gun quality — metal guns offer greater durability.

Handheld Airless Spraying Machines

Compact and portable, handheld airless sprayers are most suited to small-to-medium home improvement projects. While convenient and versatile — especially those, which are cordless — they’re significantly heavier than their handheld turbine counterparts, and harder on the pocket.

Budget Airless Sprayers

Opting to purchase an airless sprayer doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank. Many budget units offer a pressure output comparable to their more expensive and branded DIY counterparts, but at a lower price point. They’re ideal for entry-level DIYers testing the water for the first time with a hydraulic machine, and are for home-users who will only switch on the unit a few times per year.
Admittedly, they tend to feature a relatively cheap airless spray gun that lacks the durability of the high-end models — and don’t usually have access to a wide range of spare parts.

Airless Paint Sprayer Accessories and Parts

One of the advantages of opting for hydraulic sprayers from respected brands — such as Wagner, Graco, and Titan — is that they boast a vast catalog of airless sprayer parts and accessories.

Not only does this permit you to effortlessly replace perishable components, but also allows you to give your unit some TLC and monthly maintenance, or simply customize your machine to suit your particular requirements.

Below, I have listed some of the most commonly used and popular airless paint sprayer parts accessories. While components such as guns and hoses are typically cross-compatible — other parts can be model and brand-specific.

Airless Paint Gun Extension

Sometimes referred to as an airless paint sprayer extension pole or airless paint sprayer extension wand — these impressive tools allow you to reach previously inaccessible areas with your gun, such as cornices, soffits, and ceilings.

Airless Paint Sprayer Shield

With the majority of hydraulic sprayers knocking out around 3000 PSI — splatter can be an issue. Sprayer shields enable you to protect areas where paint isn’t required, and can save you time on pre-project masking.

Airless Spray Gun Filters

Airless filters protect the internal components of your gun from dirt and detritus ingress — extending the longevity. Furthermore, they ensure no particles reach your coating surface, meaning a blemish-free finish.

Airless Paint Sprayer Roller

One of the more novel airless sprayer accessories, a roller combines speedy delivery with familiar manual painting — for areas where you require the traditional stippled effect.

Airless Kits for Repair and Maintenance

No true hydraulic aficionado should be without an airless paint sprayer kit for repairs and maintenance. They allow you to rapidly replace perished or malfunctioning components, allowing you to crack on with those time-critical jobs.

Airless Paint Pump

As the hardest working components or airless sprayers, the pump can lose its efficiency through hardcore use. Ensuring you have a spare unit in your toolbox means you’re always ready for on-site breakdowns.

Airless Paint Sprayer Hose Cover

When you consider the airless paint sprayer hose price — it’s crucial you look after this vital part of your painting machine. Remnants and splatter from some mediums, especially those that are solvent-based, can gradually lead to your hose perishing. A bespoke cover is an affordable way to provide reassuring protection.

Conclusion

Airless spray painters are the go-to machines for DIYers and pro-users looking to tackle larger-scale projects.

Delivering paint more swiftly than their turbine and pneumatic counterparts, these versatile units are the consummate power tools for walls, doors, outbuildings, sheds, fences, and deckings.

The category is vast, with machines catering for casual sprayers, keen DIYers, pros, and hardcore industrial users. Hence, it’s tough to pick out the ultimate unit — as individual sprayers target differing uses — but for me, the best value airless paint sprayer has to be the Graco 390 ProConnect.

This powerful machine, with its 3300 PSI output would suit both the extreme DIYer and professional tradesperson. With 0.47 gallons per minute delivery, and a multi-medium compatible 515 tip, its ideal for speedy completion of substantial jobs,

That said, it will not be for everyone. But hopefully, after reading this airless paint sprayer guide, you now have the knowledge to select the perfect machine for your own needs.

Airless Paint Sprayers FAQs

Q: Can I Use Hero Airless Paint Sprayer Parts on a Graco Machine?

No, these components are not compatible. For repairing or maintaining your Graco machine, check out my section on airless accessories above.

Q: Where Can I Find a Cheap Airless Paint Sprayer for Sale?

Going airless doesn’t have to hurt your pocket. There are many impressive machines on the market that deliver serious PSI, yet are at a more affordable price-point than their premium branded counterparts.

I suggest checking out the reliable and powerful HomeRight Flo Pro, which knocks out 2800 PSI, boasts a non-kinking 25-foot hose, and incorporates a multi-medium compatible 515 tip.

Q: What Is a Low Pressure Airless Sprayer?

Unfortunately, they don’t exist. Airless units knock out around 3000 PSI, compared to the 5-10 PSI of a true LVLP (low-volume, low-pressure) pneumatic gun.

Q: Can I Use an Airless Paint Sprayer Indoors?

Yes. These machines are ideal for interior home improvements such as addressing walls, doors, and ceilings. For smaller projects, consider a handheld unit such as the Wagner Power Painter — and for more sizable expanses, check out the Graco X5.

For hints and tips on using an airless paint sprayer indoors, take a look at my guide here.

Q: What Is An Airless HVLP Machine?

There is no such tool. An HVLP airless paint sprayer is, by definition, impossible. Airless machines deliver extremely high pressures, whereas the key to an HVLP unit is that it delivers high volumes of paint at a low pressure.

Q: What Is the Best Airless Paint Sprayer for Interior Walls?

Boasting low-overspray, 1500 PSI, and a 30-foot hose — I suggest the best airless unit for interior walls is the Wagner Control Pro 170.

Q: What Paints Can I Use With an Airless Sprayer?

Due to their high power output, hydraulic machines are the ideal multi-medium power painters. Hence, spraying lacquer with airless sprayer, latex, elastomerics, and epoxies is achievable, usually without thinning.

Equally, using thinner mediums such as spraying oil based paint with airless sprayer, or stains or sealers, are also possible — although it’s advisable to step-down the pressure delivery to prevent overspray.

Q: What Is the Best Airless Paint Striper?

In my opinion, the ultimate striper for pavements, roads, and athletic sports fields is the NewStripe 4400. It boasts a speedy 0.44 gallons per minute delivery, compatible with water and oil-based paints, and incorporates both a tube and gun filter.
