Graco Paint Sprayer Comparison, Reviews, and Buying Guide

Whether you’re touching-up tired furniture, respraying your home, or completing an entire office block renovation — the Graco paint sprayer range has the tool for the job.

Including small handheld units, cordless machines, cart-mounted airless powerhouses, and even gasoline-driven sprayers — this brand’s products are tailored for specific applications and levels of experience.

High-end, but with a price-tag to match, Graco paint guns deliver a fine finish combined with reassuring reliability.

The Graco Brand

In the early 1920s, Russell Gray, a young man from Minneapolis with big ideas, worked as a parking attendant. In addition to collecting cash and raising and lowering the lot barrier — another part of his job description included adding lubrication to his patron’s motor vehicles with a manual greasing gun.

The issue was, the harsh winters of the Twin Cities made operating this tool seriously challenging — the trigger was liable to freeze in the cold weather, and when finally some grease did emerge, it was a thick semi-frozen sludge.

Russell complained about this situation to his elder brother Leil Gray, who, instead of offering the sympathetic ear that he was looking for, told him to stop whining, put on his big-boy pants, and find a solution.

Hence, suitably admonished, the innovative Russell developed the world’s first pneumatic grease gun capable of functioning in extreme temperatures. Impressed (and seeing the prospect of making some dollars) Leil joined forces with his brother and formed GrayCo, soon after contracted to just Graco, to retail the new tool.

By 1941, sales of the grease gun exceeded $1 million, the revenue accelerated by the demand for lubricating equipment by the Defense Department during World War II. After 1945, Graco expanded its range to include a variety of fluid propelling machines, including another world first, the airless paint gun in 1958.

Over the next 60 years, Graco grew into a paint-spraying behemoth, creating a product range that is rivaled only by Wagner and Titan. While including a few HVLP units, its machines are mainly airless in both handheld and external hydraulic powered models.

Just a word of warning — don’t confuse the Graco brand with Graco Baby, the inventors of the SwingoMatic child death trap — this company does not sell spray painters.

The Brand Range — A Graco Sprayer Comparison

The Graco line-up includes machines for the avid DIYer, tradesperson, and hardcore contractor.

Below, I compare Graco paint sprayers, to allow you to select the ideal product for you and your project’s requirements.

The Graco DIY Series

A slightly misleading name for the range.

Primarily consisting of airless handheld sprayers that are designed for home-use — they’re not exactly entry-level. These aren’t machines you’d give to your granny for a birthday present — unless she’s a pretty hardcore grandparent.

While experienced DIYers will not find their use challenging — newbies to the paint spraying world might be better suited to checking out the more user-friendly Wagner line-up.

That said, for the avid home-improver, they are awesome tools. Rated for 25-50 gallons of throughput per year, capable of multi-directional spraying, and thick medium compatible — they will provide rapid coverage with a flawless finish. They’re ideal for addressing typical household projects including interior walls, ceilings, trim, furniture, and small-scale fencing.

The series features the impressive Graco TrueCoat Pro II with its no-mess FlexLiner system, and just one external hydraulic unit, the mighty 2800 PSI Graco Project Painter Plus.

The Graco Project Series

A range where high-end DIY meets semi-pro level — perhaps best described as prosumer.

Angled towards experienced home-improvers and handypersons, this airless series is most suited to midsize projects, where use will not exceed 125 gallons per year. High-pressure pumps and speedy delivery make them ideal for addressing fencing, deckings, slat boards, outhouses, and exterior walls.

The line-up includes handheld machines such as the Ultra 17M367 — a Graco battery powered paint sprayer in a market dominated by corded units — and two external hydraulically-powered examples, including the best selling X5 model. For more info on the Graco sub-rage, check out my article here.

The Graco Pro Series

These are the true professional-grade machines in the Graco range.

Focusing on the property-renovation niche, these units boast a massive 500 gallons per year capacity. All the machines are powered by external hydraulic powerhouses that knock out a substantial 3000 PSI — allowing speedy completion of larger projects.

The sprayers boast Graco’s proprietary ProXChange Pump feature — permitting you to rapidly replace the pump while on-site — with no tools required. This dramatically reduces downtime, saving you and your customer time and money.

The series includes the industry-favored X19 model with its award-winning SG3 gun and the versatile Graco X17 machine that can handle a spray hose up to 150 feet.

The Graco Contractor Series

Machines that aren’t for the faint of heart.

These absolute spraying beasts are aimed at the hardcore, full-time, painting contractors — guys that are using their units all-day, every day.

Able to cope with an eye-watering 1500 gallons per year, these rugged behemoths boast enormous external hydraulic pumps that knock out around 3300 PSI — deliver every conceivable medium at a rapid pace, while still providing a flawless finish.

The series is dominated by the Ultra Max II 695 — an astounding unit that includes a 2.0 horsepower motor designed for the ultimate in heavy-duty use.

This product line is also somewhat of a novelty for Graco, as it includes the only HVLP turbine sprayers in its entire range. This features the respected 17N269 FinishPro, a low-noise Graco 9.5 HVLP machine that boasts adjustable turbine-fan control. Furthermore, the contractor series includes Graco’s only gasoline-powered units — such as the brawny GH230.

Due to their contractor-grade build — they can be tough on the pocket. Users looking for a slightly more economical sprayer that still possesses hardcore capabilities should check out the Titan line up.

Why Buy a Graco Paint Spraying Machine?

Admittedly, purchasing a Graco electric paint sprayer is something of an investment. Even its most affordable machine, the DIY-centric TrueCoat 360 is substantially harder on the pocket than an entry-level unit such as the Meterk.

However, the price/quality ratio of Graco sprayers makes them worthy of consideration for the ardent DIYer and tradesperson — offering durability, reliability, and access to spare parts that the lower-end machines cannot match.

Selecting the best Graco electric sprayer for your requirements means possessing a tool that:

  • Comes with an extensive warranty.
  • Is backed by over 80 years of spraying experience.
  • Has been tested by industry experts.
  • Possesses a reputation for robustness and reliability.
  • Is suited to the scale of your day-to-day projects.
  • Can be utilized with additional Graco accessories.
  • Is supported by knowledgeable customer service.
  • Targets the ardent DIYer and trade pro.
  • Has access to an extensive catalog of spare parts.

Graco Paint Sprayer Parts and Accessories

Designed for hardcore DIYers and trade pros, Graco’s machines are inherently robust and reliable — able to withstand the extreme conditions experienced on job site projects, house renovations, and construction sites.

However, intense use will naturally involve some wear and tear, meaning perishable components may cease to function at their optimum level. Thankfully, the extensive catalog of Graco paint sprayer gun parts means these items can be easily and affordably replaced.

Furthermore, if you’re a trade user — having spares of the most common Graco paint sprayers parts in your toolbox means less downtime, saving you money and keeping your customer happy.

Finally, it isn’t all about repair. Having a ready supply of Graco airless paint sprayer accessories allows you to customize your machine for your particular projects, and enables you to give your unit some monthly TLC — extending its life span.

While not exhaustive, here are my picks of the most useful Graco spray machine parts and accessories.

Graco Gun Filter

Having a ready supply of Graco spray gun filters ensures that your finish is always blemish and detritus free, while also protecting the crucial internal components. As sizes and compatibility vary between models, it’s important to ensure you have the correct Graco paint sprayer filter for your specific gun.

Here are the most common products:

Graco Airless Paint Sprayer Hose

Hoses take a lot of hammering, not only are they dealing with seriously high pressures on airless machines — extensive use can lead to degradation around both the gun and hydraulic connectors.

These replacement Graco airless paint sprayer parts allow you to extend or shorten your hose if your current pipe is insufficient for your most common projects.

Graco Paint Sprayer Extension Wand

Perhaps one of the most useful and inexpensive of all Graco airless sprayer accessories.

Some areas may just be out of arm’s length when painting, such as ceilings. A Graco paint sprayer extension wand enables you not only to reach these areas without having to find your ladder in the garage — but also allows you to reach hard to access areas where space is limited.

Graco Paint Sprayer Nozzle

The most crucial of all Graco paint sprayer accessories.

The ardent DIYer and especially the trade-pro should have an ample supply of Graco spray nozzles to ensure the perfect delivery of the current coating medium — preventing any unnecessary downtime.

Graco Oil Pump

Having Graco paint pump parts as part of your toolbox armory allows you to respond rapidly should this essential component fail — a nightmare if it occurs during a time-sensitive project.

Always ensure that you have the correct part for your particular machine — as although many are cross-compatible, some units require a specific example.

Conclusion

Seriously robust, powerful, and reliable — the Graco paint spraying series targets hardcore DIYers and committed trade professionals who accept nothing less than the ultimate power painting.

With a range that extends from small-scale home-improvement jobs through to large-scale commercial projects — Graco is a one-stop-shop for the ardent spraying enthusiast.

While all its units offer an exemplary finish combined with rapid coverage, in my opinion, the mighty 390 ProConnect stands above the rest. Boasting a lengthy 50-foot hose, a brawny 3300 PSI output, and with multi-medium compatibility — it’s a machine worthy of the hardcore DIYer and the dedicated contractor.

Admittedly, the Graco line-up isn’t for everyone — casual users and spraying newbies should consider a more DIY-centric brand such as the Wagner series. However, for industry pros and those who demand a machine capable of massive annual throughput — the Graco paint sprayer range is worthy of serious consideration.
