Porter Cable US58 – The Basics
Heavy duty operation is a piece of cake for this particular model. Whether you’re an amateur or a professional, it doesn’t matter; this model is able to cope with your demands. The lightweight design makes it one of the most desirable ones on the market, especially if you’re planning to use it for large projects. As you may know, weight plays a significant role in timely tasks, and this one is a great solution considering the fact that it weighs only around 1.8 pounds.
As long as you follow some simple rules from the user manual and stay within the limits of this model, you shouldn’t have any considerable issues at all.
The design is pretty conventional; there are no “wow” factors about it. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad tool. The handle is protected with a rubber coating which allows you to use the unit even if you’re prone to having sweaty hands. Also, it’s a good safety feature because it prevents slipping and accidental discharges.
The reloading mechanism is also pretty standard. The quick release system lets you reload and unjam the unit within seconds. Therefore, you won’t have to take breaks in order to fix the issue; you can do it on the go.
Upholstery Staple guns usually struggle with the nose length, especially if you’re processing thick materials. Many models aren’t able to pierce through a couple of layers of cloth which makes them useless on many occasions. Luckily, this particular device has an elongated nose which allows you to pierce deeper and process more layers of cloth without worrying about the piercing depth.
This is an air-powered model meaning it requires a separate air compressor in order to work. People often get cold feet when they realize further investment is needed. However, thanks to the innovative design, this device needs only around 80 PSI. In other words, you can buy whichever compressor you want as long as it’s able to deliver at least 100 PSI of pressure. Needless to say, the choice is massive, and you’ll definitely find a compressor that suits your budget.
Things we liked about it
The weight is the first thing we’ve noticed. The moment you take this model in your hands, you’ll realize how light and stable it is. As you may know, lightweight and stability are two important factors in every pneumatic tool. Luckily, this particular one has great values in both departments.
The other thing we really liked is the price. While one cannot say it’s a particularly cheap piece of equipment, the price-to-quality ratio is more than favorable. In other words, if your budget allows it, don’t hesitate to make an investment, it’s worth the effort. Also, if you take a look at the dimensions, you’ll see it’s a pretty small product meaning anyone can use it, even people who have small hands.
Things we didn’t like
The unit lacks a couple of features. Also, it doesn’t look aesthetically appealing whatsoever. Granted, the design team probably didn’t think about the aesthetics but performance. Either way, they could have designed it to be a bit prettier. Another problem we had with it is the fact that it looks cheaply made. Even though we know it’s a quality unit, it doesn’t look like one.
The unit doesn’t come with a hard case, which should be a standard accessory. Although some people don’t consider it as a downside, storing the unit safely will prolong the lifespan of it. Therefore, you should get a hold of a case and keep your new stapler in it at all times. Misfires and jamming are a somewhat frequent occurrence, but those problems are easily solvable thanks to the innovative mechanisms within the unit.
General user impressions
People who reupholstered their furniture said it’s a pretty effective tool. However, some said it doesn’t excel in any other field but upholstery. Therefore, if you’re planning to do some other projects apart from upholstery, you might want to find something else, this one isn’t the best for it.
The reviews are mostly positive, which is a good indication of decent quality. As far as we are concerned, it’s a worthy investment if you know what you are looking for.
If you’re asking whether it’s a worthy investment, the answer is – it depends. Before you determine whether it’s worth investing money, you should consider your demands. As we already said, when upholstery is in question, the Porter Cable US58 is among the best for the job. On the other hand, it does not work well for other tasks such as laminate installing, piercing through a dense piece of wood, and so on.
In the end, it’s up to you to see if it meets your expectations. If it does, don’t hesitate to invest in it. However, if you feel like it’s not the thing you’re looking for, feel free to check our other reviews out.
